Observation Narrative
Plot location: ca. 7 meters from edge of channel along north side a Northwest River tributary, 0.9 miles south of the mouth of Indian Creek. Plot center marked with a 1" white PVC pipe.
Water depth 3-30cm.
Hummock and hollow microtopography.
NOTE: Water level of channel ca. 30cm below high water mark on trees and shrubs on 8/1/95.
Refractometer measurements: (8/1/95)= 1 ppt; (10/16/95)= 3 ppt.
This plot documents tall, floristically diverse marsh vegetation characteristic of the larger channel edges. Major species include Spartina cynosuroides, Hibiscus moscheutos, Decodon verticillatus, Panicum virgatum, Sagittaria lancifolia, and many other species. Also present and forming an "understory" are species which dominate the low to mid-height marshes of this river. Eleocharis fallax, E. rostellata, Pontederia cordata, Cladium mariscoides, etc. An outstanding and unusual feature of this stand is an abundance of Spartina alterniflora, which is generally confined to floristically depauperate, saline estuarine tidal marshes. Individuals of Spartina alterniflora here are exceptionally vigorous, some reaching 2.5 meters in height, and the population merits additional physiologic, taxonomic, and ecological study.
